The most followed religions in the United States of America are those who call themselves Christian, and the Protestants with the largest number of followers. Being a former British colony, it was natural that figure, however, the Anglican Church has lost positions as the religion with the largest number of devotees in the country, accounting currently somewhere around 1.5%. Churches Baptist (25.3%), Pentecostal (8.9%) and Lutheran (5.1%) are the most practiced religions Protestant, followed by para-Mormon Protestant (4.1%). Although most of the U.S. population declare themselves Protestant, however, the Catholic Church is still the religion which alone has the largest number of faithful, with 44.3% of the population.
It is noteworthy that, overall, the United States, like much of the New World, represented a safe haven for devotees of faiths other than Catholic, mainly fleeing the Inquisition [citation needed]. Among these stand out the Jews, representing 1% of American devotees. Then we have Buddhists (0.9%) and Muslims (0.6%).
It is worth noting the large number of Americans who declare themselves atheists or agnostics, representing around 15% of the population .
